What is Cost Basis?
Cost basis is the original value of an asset for tax purposes, usually the purchase price, adjusted for stock splits, dividends, and return of capital distributions. This value is used to determine the capital gain or loss, which is equal to the difference between the asset's cost basis and the current market value.
Why is calculating average cost important?
Traders often "scale in" to positions, buying shares at different prices over time. This strategy, known as Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA), can lower the impact of volatility. Knowing your weighted average price helps you understand your true break-even point—the price at which you can sell your entire position without losing money.
The Formula
Average Cost = Total Cost / Total Shares
Where Total Cost is the sum of (Shares × Price) for all transactions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this calculator include trading fees?
To include commissions or fees, simply add the fee amount to the total purchase price before dividing by shares, or slightly adjust the "Price per Share" to reflect the cost with fees included.
Can I use this for crypto?
